Newton Carnival Team was formed in 1999 with an aim to promote community participation within the parish, seeing the revival of the traditional Carnival last hosted by the village in the 1950's.
On the 7th January 1999 a group of friends joined by a representative from Bolsover Community Voluntary Services gathered in a local pub to discuss the possibilities of forming a constituted group with the aim to stage a carnival.
The following 6 months involved many fundraising activities to raise sufficient funds to stage Newton's first carnival. Each month the team organised pub quizzes, BBQ's, coffee mornings and fayres. Public interest began to grow and residents gathered to support this new community venture.
On Saturday 1st July 1999 Newton hosted its first carnival. The event proved a huge success, beyond all expectations and an inspiration to organise further activities to enhance our new found community spirit.
During the past 11 years we have raised over 130,000.00 for various projects and activities for our community. One of our major achievements has been to secure funding to provide the village with a display of Christmas street lights, designed by our local school children. Newton now hosts a magnificent array of Winter illuminations, with plans to extend our collection over the coming years.
As an established group, we have also been fortunate enough to purchase a wide range of equipment, including 12 marquees. This has enabled Newton Carnival Team to offer assistance to other local groups and charities through loan of this much needed equipment, seeing the revival of further carnivals within the parish.
As a community group we continue to work along side other groups to make Newton and the surrounding parish a better place to live and grow.
